How it's built

From rubbish to rammed earth

01

Foundations & walls

Used tyres are packed with mud and rubble, then pounded until they bulge — weighing 200 to 300 lbs depending on size — to form solid, rammed-earth foundations and walls.

02

Bond beams

Plastic bottles, tins and soda cans reinforce the belt and bond beam, later plastered over so they disappear entirely into the finished structure.

03

Bottle bricks

Glass bottles are cut at the base, cleaned and taped in pairs to form bricks — set into walls, or positioned to let sunlight scatter through in colour.

04

Seats, steps & benches

Even the comfortable spots are made from waste: every seat, step and bench is packed with reclaimed material.
