We work with a wide range of inorganic waste — tyres, tins, jars, plastic bottles, bags, twine, styrofoam and more — material that would otherwise sit in landfill for centuries.
Every load that arrives is sorted and washed with rainwater harvested from our Earthship. Tyres, pounded full of earth, become the building's foundations. Plastic bottles and tins form the walls and bond beams. Glass bottles are cut, cleaned and taped in pairs to make bricks — some set into walls, others placed to let daylight scatter through in colour.
By making ourselves known to local schools, bars, restaurants, lodges and dumps, we've been able to reuse over 1,000 tyres, 200,000 plastic bottles and 350,000 glass bottles in our buildings so far — and we're always looking for more.
